001. Honey, I'm Home!

I found this dress at the Salvation Army, on sale for only a DOLLAR! It was originally a size 18, which is too big for me. It also had shoulder pads and almost reached my ankles! The sleeves also needed to be shortened. Despite all of its shortcomings, I was so excited when I found it.

A lady in the store asked me "... you know you're lookin' at plus-size, right?" I've gotten used to strange stares when looking through the men's button-ups and when I hold up the plus size in the mirror to see if the fabric looks good on me. If anyone asks, I'm a seamstress! They usually don't... and just stare.

Luckily for me,  this year I was cast in a short student film and needed to come up with a costume for a 1950's housewife! This dress was waiting patiently in my "hot mess with potential" pile at home, just waiting to be made over for such an occasion. And a 5 star make-over she received.

A few sprinkles of fairy dust later and we have....

I also found a pretty pillowcase at the thrift store for fifty cents!  I cut off a long rectangular strip for the waistband of the apron, and another square for the side pocket!

Then I took some white ribbon I had lying around my craft room and added trim to the apron and dress!!

Ta-da!!

The whole outfit is for sale in my Etsy store!
